When Zia (Patrick Fugit) kills himself by cutting his wrists, he enters the afterlife to find that it's worse than the life he just ended. This limbo is inhabited by others who have taken their lives - including Eugene (Shea Whigham), a rocker from Russia who lives with his mother, father and brother, all who killed themselves as well. Zia and Eugene spend more of their time together in bars, until Zia learns that someone he once knew has committed suicide. They go on a trip to find the newly dead, picking up vagrant Mikal (Shannyn Sossamon) along the way. She is not accepting her new reality and wants to seek the People in Charge to be sent back. This group of suicide victims travel through limbo together, coming across an incognito angel, Kneller (Tom Waits).
